A person was rescued from an upstairs flat after the shop below went up in flames. Emergency services were called to Kensington at around 6.30pm on Thursday, April 24.
When the ECHO arrived at the scene this evening, a large cordon was in place. Three fire engines, four police cars and one ambulance were parked outside a row of shops.
Fire crews arrived to find plumes of smoke billowing from a ground floor shop. One person was rescued from the flat, conscious and breathing, and taken to hospital to be checked over.
A neighbour, who lives a few doors down from the cordon, described how she “packed essentials” when she saw the fire engines. “We were just eating our tea when we heard the fire engine. We just started panicking and I packed essentials in case we needed to leave.”
A spokesperson for Mersey Fire said: “Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) are in attendance at an incident in the L7 area of Liverpool on the evening of Thursday 24th April.
“Crews were alerted at 18.30 and on scene at 18.34 with three fire engines attending.
“This was in response to reports of smoke issuing from a building approximately 50 metres, consisting of commercial premises and residential flats above.
“On arrival crews located smoke logging to a ground floor shop, no visible signs of fire. Firefighters gained access to the flats above to search for occupants and fire.
“One occupant was rescued by the Fire Service, conscious and breathing, and conveyed into the care of North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), before being taken to hospital for further treatment.
“Two teams of two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus (BA) with one hose reel jet continued to search and clear the premises. The fire was extinguished at 19.21 and confined to the room of origin. All persons accounted for, and ventilation is in progress.
“Merseyside Police are also in attendance to assist with traffic management. Crews are remaining at scene to fit smoke alarms throughout the premises.”
