Viewers are questioning who the real John Sugden is

Emmerdale fans are convinced they have “worked out” who John was visiting in hospital. The final scene saw him talking to a mystery patient which left fans wondering who it may be. The twist comes after weeks of suspicious activity in the village all centred around John Sugden. The character arrived in the village last year and recently got engaged to fan favourite character Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).

Played by former Coronation Street actor Oliver Farnworth, the mysterious character has been concealing a significant secret from his fiancé and the rest of the village.

On Tuesday, John misdiagnosed Kerry when she arrived at the doctor’s surgery in need of help. Liam was furious to see that John did not complete the correct checks and as a result gave him an “official warning”.

John looked increasingly suspicious as he failed to help Kerry, with fans wondering if he was somewhat responsible for her weak condition. Later in the episode, fans saw him get overwhelmed and take himself away from the village to have some time to himself.

But to their surprise, John revealed a more physically violent side to his personality, as he smashed up a car as a way to take out his anger. The scene left viewers wondering what John has got to hide, and more so made them realise what the character is truly capable of.

He woke up on the sofa, telling his fiance Aaron Dingle: “I can’t just switch off when I get home sometimes.” He later opened up to Victoria about his past traumas. He said: “Someone I treated in the army had a bad reaction to their medication, a really bad one.”

Aaron was frustrated that John was keeping his distance and told him to leave him alone, to which Aaron said: “I will leave you alone. If you carry on like this I’ll leave you alone permanently.”

Fans took to social media following the argument. One wrote: “Please do Aaron, please, leave him permanently!” More added to the conversation on X: “Best thing Aaron could do is leave John, the mood he’s in Aaron could end up floating around next to Nate…”

At the end of Wednesday’s broadcast, John visited a patient in hospital which left fans wondering who it could be. John told the mystery man: “You and me, what are we going to do? Or what am I going to have to do?”

Viewers flooded the comments on X as they all made their predictions on who the new character may be, and how he will fit into the lives of the villagers. One wrote: “I’m wondering if that’s the real John Sugden?”

More said: “Omg has ‘John’ been an imposter this whole time??? Is that the real John Sugden in the hospital bed?” and “Calling it now he’s the real John in the hospital.”

Fans are convinced John is responsible for Nate Robinson’s murder, who disappeared from the village last year. In the coming days, through a series of flashbacks, Emmerdale will delve deeper into the life of a man who seems to be a supportive and considerate member of the village.

ITV bosses have disclosed that the forthcoming episodes over the next week will unmask the true John Sugden, revealing the secrets and lies that shroud him.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
