Viewers saw the drama continue in the Dales
Emmerdale fans were not best pleased when one character was taken away from the village. On Wednesday, fans saw Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Liam (Jonny McPherson) report Ella (Paula Lane) to the police after not one, but two mysterious occurrences in the village.
Belle had received an email to cancel Chas and Liam’s wedding, and a brick was thrown through the window later in the episode. When the couple debated who was capable of doing such a thing, the blame was immediately thrown onto Ella.
In recent episodes, the character was branded as the psycho ex-girlfriend who was furious that Liam was now engaged to Chas Dingle.
Chas had been taking codeine after suffering from back pain following the tragic limo crash earlier this year. She was taken to hospital after overdosing on her medication, which resulted in her collapsing in the Woolpack.
Local GP Liam immediately pointed the finger at Ella. Despite denying everything, the villagers continued to turn against her and she fled the village after Manpreet kicked her out.
This week, Ella made a dramatic return, trapping Mandy in the house with her, insisting she needed to talk to Liam and “explain everything.” Ella pointed a knife at Liam as she told him: “Chas is setting me up to make you hate me.” She added: “She’s trying to destroy me, you can’t trust her.”
She confessed her love for Liam and said: “It’s me you should be with not Chas.” Liam lied to her and said they could run away together, with the hopes she would reveal the truth about what she had done.
Ella admitted she was responsible for swapping Chas’ medication which made her overdose. The police soon arrived and she ran away, closely followed by Liam.
In a shocking turn of events, they entered the woods and Liam grabbed the knife off Ella and they both fell to the floor. She soon changed her mind and said she had not drugged Chas. But Liam hit his head on a rock and fell unconscious.
When the police arrived to arrest Ella, she was still convinced she was innocent. Liam managed to regain consciousness and Ella begged him to believe she had not drugged Chas. Viewers saw the character taken away as Chas and Liam returned home to carry on with their lives.
A relieved Chas felt like she could “finally breathe again” now Ella was in custody. However, Liam was still curious whether Ella was responsible or if his fiancée was hiding a darker secret.
Fans took to social media after the dramatic scenes and all said the same thing about Ella’s sudden exit. One asked: “Seriously???? Is that the end of Ella??????”
More added to the conversation on X: “This Ella exit storyline is ridiculous! I don’t think a doctor’s receptionist can make changes to the dosages on a prescription, can they!? Plus there is so much lack of evidence to send Ella back to prison.”
Another said: “If this is Ella’s exit then it’s pathetic! Paula Lane deserved so much better, brilliant actress and her character wasted on a pathetic love triangle. Better Liam and Chas! There was so much potential for Ella as a character as well! Awful writing.” Viewers were left on the ultimate cliff-hanger, still questioning if Ella was telling the truth.
Paula made her debut in the Dales in January 2024. She traded the drama in Weatherfield to take on the role of Ella Forster, who found herself out of a job when she stuck up for Mandy Dingle, played by Lisa Riley.
Jonny McPherson who plays Liam on Emmerdale, has spoken highly of Paula’s acting as Ella, reports Leeds Live. He said: “Paula is just a wonderful lady and impeccably professional who is born of many years working on Corrie.
“Obviously, the genre that we work in is very particular in terms of the working requirements. She’s got more experience than any of us, she was on Corrie for seven years, working 12-hour days, week in, week-out.
“She’s impeccably professional, always fun on-set. Knows her lines and is just lots of fun to be around. The ability to be able to step outside the intensity of a scene and crack a gag and, you know, talk about what you had for tea the night before. She’s definitely on board with that method. It has been an absolute pleasure.”
