Adolescence fans were mind blown after watching the scene again
Adolescence viewers were taken aback after one fan noticed a hidden detail during the first episode of the hit Netflix series. The four part drama landed on the streaming platform earlier this month and has had everyone talking.
Stephen Graham stars as Eddie Miller in the show, a dad whose life is turned upside down when his son, Jamie, is accused of murder. The 51-year-old from Kirkby also co-wrote the show and said he was inspired by real life tragic events.
On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he said: “I read an article in the paper. It was about a young boy who stabbed a young girl to death. A couple of months later on the news there was a piece about a young boy who stabbed a young girl to death. And these were at opposite ends of the country.
“If I’m really honest with you, it hurt my heart and I just think what kind of society are we living in at the moment where young boys are stabbing young girls. You know that beautiful saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’
“I just thought what if we’re all kind of accountable. The education system, parenting, community, the government. Also, when we were kids, we didn’t have social media.
“We were either playing out in the streets or, we were in our rooms, drawing pictures. We didn’t have the accessibility to all of this stuff in the world that really influences young minds. I wanted to take a look at it. I’m not blaming anyone. I just thought maybe we’re all accountable and we should have a conversation about it.”
In the show, Stephen’s onscreen son, Jamie, is accused of killing a fellow pupil at his school named Katie Leonard. In the first episode of the series, Detective Inspector Bascombe (Ashley Walters) barges into Jamie’s room (Owen Cooper) before questioning him on suspicion of murder.
Fans have been quick to take note of one secret detail in the scene, which is easily missed. Jamie is startled as he is awaken by the police entering his room. He reaches for the wall next to him in bed, but appears to place his hand in a specific point to a rip in his wallpaper.
One observant viewer noticed the rip in fact resembles a knife, foreshadowing the audience finding out that Jamie was involved in a stabbing. Taking to social media platform TikTok, Susanne_1980 captioned the post: “Can you see it?” as she shared a video of the moment Ashely Walters enters the bedroom.
She also wrote: “The biggest conspiracy theory for anyone who has seen this, what do you see on the wall, definitely a hint of what he has been arrested for.”
Fans took to the comments after witnessing the mind-blowing hidden element. A user named Mike said: “Nooooooo I’ve got to re watch it to clock that.
@djm1379 posted: “Little touches like these are what makes brilliance even nearer perfection. I love re-watching stuff to pick up things I missed when immersed in the story first time around.” Another viewer wrote: “That’s actually so smart for foreshadowing.”
But the wallpaper isn’t the only hidden detail featured in the series. Filmed in one take, Adolescence ends in haunting fashion as a drone shot moves the camera from outside the school to the scene of Katie’s murder.
Netflix revealed the choir song playing over the scene is sung by Emilia Holliday, who played Katie in the show. The post was captioned: “Oh great I’m crying again.”
Followers took to the comments and praised the hidden detail as they said it moved them to tears. Charlotte said: “oof – that’s actually heartbreaking but so clever.
“Blimey the amount of thought that has gone into all of the elements of this series. Just blows my tiny mind…” Neil posted: “The song itself is hauntingly beautiful, but to find out the solo line at the end is sung by the girl who was killed is just [tears emoji]. What an incredible show.”
Adolescence is available to watch on Netflix now.
