The 1% Club returned to our screens tonight, with a university student taking home £98,000. Joshua, from Cardiff University, said if he won the money, he would invest in a swimming pool treadmill.
The teenager will be able to do so after answering the final question and outsmarting the other final contestants. The unique ITV quiz show offers players the chance to win up to £100,000.
Hosted by Lee Mack, the show features 100 fresh contestants attempting to answer logic-based questions that progressively increase in difficulty.
According to a survey conducted by the show’s producers, 90% of the British public could answer the first question. However, only 1% of people can answer the final question correctly.
In this case, the final question was mathematics-based: “What is the lowest number to have the same value as ten times the number of letters in its name?”
While others chose seven, eight, and 100 as their answers, Joshua picked the winning answer with 50. That is because fifty has five letters in the spelling, and when you multiply five by 10, you get 50 again.
Many playing from home took to social media to express their frustration with not being able to figure it out in time. Laura said: “I always think it’s cruel to have a maths question for the 1% question!!”
Ann added: “I wasn’t close, but now I’ve seen the answer, I realise it would have been really quick and easy if you’d known what to do.”
Daniel wrote: “I nearly put fifty too”, whereas Charlotte said: “Wouldn’t have gotten that 1% question in a million years.”
Rach said: “My 10-year-old Son just got the 1% question right whilst I had no clue. How is he my son?”. Tracey added: “I got the 50% question before the timer even started but almost didn’t get the 60% one – this show annoys me sometimes.”
