Footage shows car engulfed in flames in Birkdale
A car was deliberately set on fire as “two lads” were reportedly seen running away from the scene. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called to Upper Aughton Road in Birkdale at around 9.15pm on Friday, March 21.
When firefighters arrived at the scene they found a car on a driveway on fire. A video of the scene showed the Mercedes engulfed by flames as crews tackled the blaze.
An eyewitness claimed that police officers at the scene told him “two lads” were seen “sprinting” from the scene. Merseyside Police were also called to the scene at around 9.40pm. A spokesperson for the force said the blaze also caused damage to the front door and glass of a nearby property. There are no reports of any injuries.
Police said the cause of the fire is believed to be “suspected malicious ignition”. An investigation is underway and house-to-house and CCTV enquiries have been carried out in the local area.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed the fire has been determined as deliberate ignition and Merseyside Police are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting reference 25000236726.
