A fourth-generation tenant farmer has issued a stark warning about the impact of inheritance tax on British agriculture, warning that Labour’s policies are “pushing farmers to war” with the Government.Farmer Alan Hughes told GB News that despite only owning 65 acres, his family farm faces crippling inheritance tax burdens.Protesters took to UK roads once again in their tractors to demonstrate against the tax raid, with farmers from campaign group Farmers to Action gathering in Shropshire to express their outrage at Labour’s refusal to U-turn.Speaking to GB News, Hughes described it as a “terrible inheritance tax, the death tax” that threatens the future of his farming operation.Hughes explained: “‘I’m a fourth generation tenant farmer. We only own 65 acres, yet we are on the cusp of paying this terrible inheritance tax, the death tax.”All these people here today and thousands more will be forced out of business, so that they can compulsory purchase our land for greening, capture projects and solar farms, which will push up the food prices for everyone in this country.”Issuing a stark warning for the future of British farming, Hughes claimed that there will be a “significant drop” in food security for the country if Labour go ahead with the tax raid.He stated: “Make no mistake, when National Insurance comes in and these inheritance taxes, there will be a massive reduction in food production in this country.LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:Jeremy Clarkson, 64, wades into Labour benefits cut row with blistering Starmer rant: ‘Marxist!’Rachel Reeves torn apart in blistering rant over ‘dangerous’ economic policies: ‘She’s a disaster!’Inheritance tax raid blasted by farmer as Keir Starmer issues assurances”We are looking more and more like Labour pushing us to war.”Highlighting how Labour’s refusal could also result in “skyrocketing prices” for food in Britain, Hughes stated that the Government are making the “same mistakes” over and over again. He added: “They didn’t learn this the last two world wars round, and they’re making the same mistakes too. “We need to be securing our national food security for everyone so we can all afford to eat nutritious, healthy food – not seeing prices skyrocket due to disastrous Labour policies.”From April 2026, taxes would apply to agricultural assets over £1million. The Government has said this would “just affect the wealthiest landowners” and “disincentivise buying agricultural land to avoid tax”. Farming groups have argued the policy is a threat to the future of family farming and the UK’s food security.
