Will be speaking to him again at 3:00 P.M,” Trump added.Trump used the fentanyl crisis as a major justification for the tariffs, which impose double-digit charges on products and resources from Canada, Mexico, and China. However, the fentanyl epidemic was already declining even before he took office, and in the case of Canada specifically, very little of the illegal drug trade occurs at the country’s U.S. border.Already, businesses in swing states near Canada are bracing for the negative economic impact of the tariffs. And it could escalate rapidly, as the premier of Ontario has already retaliated by canceling Elon Musk’s Starlink contract with the province and banning any future U.S. business contracts with his provincial government as long as the tariffs are in place.The other countries impacted by tariffs may also soon retaliate, with Mexico potentially launching tariffs of its own and China moving to sue the United States at the World Trade Organization.
