The ECHO revealed that two popular venues shut their doors following health inspections last week
One of two Liverpool city centre restaurants which closed temporarily last week has now re-opened.
On Saturday, the ECHO revealed that both Hanover Street Social and neighbouring venue Albert’s Schenke had suddenly closed temporarily following inspections by Liverpool Council’s environmental health teams last week. Both businesses had their shutters down over the weekend and earlier this week, with signs stating that they were closed for maintenance reasons. Both venues remain closed today.
The ECHO understands that the closures were put in place to allow the operators of both businesses to address some concerns raised by the inspectors.
Now it has been confirmed that one of the two venues – Albert’s Schenke – has reopened following a re-inspection by the council on Wednesday. The ECHO understands that Hanover Street Social will be revisited later this week when it may also reopen.
While Albert’s Schenke has not responded to requests for comment, on Monday Hanover Street Social released a statement about the action they have taken.
A spokesperson for the business told the ECHO: “We took the decision last Thursday to close Hanover Street Social for essential maintenance and refurbishment. Environmental health issues were brought to our attention following the closure of Albert’s Schenke a couple of days earlier.
“A full audit has now been conducted by an external party in conjunction with Environmental Health with work now underway to ensure Hanover Street Social regains the 5-star hygiene rating that we have held regularly over the ten years we have been in business.”
The business said it has had ongoing concerns about the derelict Gostins Building next door to it, which it says have been raised with the city council. The spokesperson added: “We have since taken matters into our own hands and are confident that the building works we have taken will fully secure the restaurant.
“We sincerely apologize to our customers and our community for this situation. We would like to reassure guests that we are taking every possible step to resolve these issues promptly and hope to be back open very soon. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work to rectify these matters.”
