Thousands of people have reported an outage which is still affecting two parts of the city
Three mobile phone users are complaining of a “total loss of signal” in parts of Liverpool. The problem has persisted all week for some customers, with some saying they haven’t had any signal in Liverpool city centre since Monday, January 20.
Users say they are unable to make calls or access the internet, making their phones virtually unusable. Three customer Olivia, who lives in Wirral but works in Liverpool, told the ECHO: “Every time I come into the city centre since Monday I’ve not had signal or internet.”
Kate, who also works in Liverpool said: “I don’t have any signal at all in Liverpool, so I can’t make calls or use 4G. I just see the little SOS emergency calls symbol on my screen with no signal bars appearing.
“I thought it was a problem with my phone, so called Three on Tuesday for a replacement SIM, which they sent. But when it arrived, the problem persisted. All my friends with Three have got the same issue. It’s been down all week.”
Three customers have reported issues with their signal in other parts of the country too. On Thursday, some customers said they had been left unable to phone 999 during emergencies.
In a statement on X yesterday, Three UK said: “Following an issue affecting voice calls yesterday, services have almost returned to normal overnight. Our monitoring has picked up an issue with calls connected via WiFI which we’re investigating urgently. Today, we also expect to see an additional impact on our service due to Storm Eowyn in some areas.
“We’ve deployed extra engineering resources and planning for these areas, so we can bring sites that are impacted back online as soon as it’s safe to do so. A normal volume of 999 calls were connected yesterday and monitoring confirms the service is working fully this morning. We continue to investigate the small number of reports we received about 999 call failures. We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused by the issues on our voice network.”
On Thursday, DownDetector, a website that monitors outages, showed more than 10,000 people reported problems from around 1pm. When the ECHO checked the site today, Saturday January 25, hundreds of customers had reported issues, with Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester the most reported locations.
A Three spokesperson told the ECHO on Sunday, January 26: “Two of our sites serving the L2 and L3 postcodes have been out of service since 19th January. We are aware of what the issue is but, unfortunately, an engineer visit yesterday was cancelled due to high winds.
“We will attempt to fix it tomorrow. While customers should be able to pick up signal from nearby sites, they will be a lot busier than usual. We apologise for any inconvenience this is causing.”
