Weather warnings are covering the whole of the UK tomorrow
The Met Office has warned of damaging winds as Storm Éowyn approaches the UK. The storm will begin to influence the UK’s weather early on Friday.
Weather warnings are covering the whole of the UK, with red alerts issued for Northern Ireland as well as central and southwestern areas of Scotland. Other parts of the country are under a yellow or amber alert for tomorrow, Friday 24. Parts of the UK will remain under alerts for wind and rain until Monday, January 27.
The Red Squirrel Survival Trust has given a storm warning for homeowners. They have warned of ‘serious’ damage to homes and gardens because of grey squirrels. The trust received reports from its UK network of volunteers that the non-native grey enjoyed a stellar breeding season in 2024.
They warn that the growing number of grey squirrels will head for lofts and roof spaces across Britain to shelter from the approaching storm. The Red Squirrel Trust say: “As they make themselves comfortable, they will feast on wiring, water pipes, guttering, fascia boards and roof timbers.”
Vanessa Fawcett, campaign director at the Red Squirrel Survival Trust, added “Each year grey squirrels cause more than £37 million of damage to trees in the UK and this is likely to increase as more trees are planted to help the country achieve carbon zero status by 2050. Our national green energy policy and our homes are at risk from the greys.”
Once the worst of the storm is over, the trust say the grey squirrels are likely to feast on trees and shrubs in gardens. Figures from LV= General Insurance, which is part of Allianz, reflects the high cost of damage caused by squirrels, with average domestic claims costing £3000 each.
Merseyside has been issued with two weather warnings for tomorrow, Friday 24. A yellow alert has been issued by the weather agency and will last from midnight tomorrow until 11:59pm tomorrow. The 23-hour alert coincides with an amber alert also covering the region. The amber warning will be in place from 6am tomorrow until 9pm tomorrow.
A further yellow warning has today been announced for all of Merseyside for Sunday, January 26. This will be in place from 8am until 3pm on the same day. The weather agency has warned people should expect some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport. It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves and some bus and train services may be affected, with some journeys taking longer.
