A finance expert said making a few simple changes can cut your energy bills
People are being warned about the ‘phantom load’ draining your energy bills, but there is a way to stop it.
NerdWallet UK’s personal finance guru Amy Knight has shed light on the “phantom load” that could be secretly inflating your energy bills. Whether your home is powered entirely by electricity or uses a combination of gas and electricity, this phantom load might be responsible for up to a 30% hike in your energy costs.
Amy said: “Energy consumed by appliances [regarded as the ‘phantom load’] on standby can add up to 30% to bills.” She recommends turning off devices at the socket to notch up savings over time.
But Amy didn’t stop there; she also dished out additional savvy tips to cut down on energy expenses. When selecting an energy provider, Amy suggests spending an extra five minutes to ensure you’re on the most cost-effective tariff.

She said: “Use price comparison websites to see which providers can offer the best energy price for your property.”
For those concerned about affording heating costs this winter, Amy urges contacting your energy supplier, who is obliged to assist vulnerable customers and those facing financial hardship. And here’s a bright idea from Amy: LED lightbulbs may cost a bit more initially than traditional bulbs, but they “use up to 90% less energy and last 20 times longer”, reports the Express.
By switching all your bulbs to LEDs, you could save around £1,200, especially if you have eight bulbs to change. Amy added: “The lifespan of an LED bulb means you’ll continue benefiting from lower energy use for years to come.”
She also suggested avoiding turning up the thermostat by simply fitting “draught-proof strips around windows and reflective foil behind radiators to direct heat back into the room”.
By reducing the amount of heat that escapes your home, you can lower the thermostat and cut energy bills.
