The alert will mark the seventh consecutive day of weather warnings
Another weather warning has been issued for Merseyside as the cold weather continues. Temperatures are set to drop from 1am until 11am on Friday, January 10 when a freezing chill of -2 C is forecast. The new warning is a yellow ice alert which will be the seventh consecutive day of weather warnings for the region.
The yellow ice warning is in place from 4pm today and will remain active until 10am tomorrow morning. Ahead of the 18-hour warning, the weather service has warned of scattered wintry showers which may lead to icy patches and travel disruption.
The areas of the North West affected include: Merseyside, Warrington, Lancashire, Halton, Manchester, Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East. The Met Office map below shows the whole of Merseyside covered by the alert.
Merseyside has experienced high levels of disruption today with the city battling a yellow warning for snow and ice. The travel chaos resulted in all services across the Merseyrail network suspended, leaving commuters stranded and trying to find other ways to get to work or around the region. It is not the first time the rail network has been badly affected by cold weather this winter.
Offering further detail into the conditions people can expect, the Met Office said: “Scattered wintry showers on Thursday evening will slowly fade overnight, leading to the risk of icy patches on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing. Isolated snow accumulations of 2-4 cm will be possible, more especially in Wales on hills above 150m elevation.”
People should be cautious of some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and beware of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces. The advice, issued to keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy, is to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips and falls.
