Storm Éowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and some disruption tomorrow
Merseyside has been placed under a double weather warning for wind as Storm Éowyn is expected to batter the UK. A yellow and amber alert are both in place across parts of the region tomorrow (Friday).
Storm Éowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and some disruption tomorrow, the Met Office has warned of damage to buildings and power cuts. Road, rail, air and ferry services are likely to be affected with longer journey times and cancellations possible.
A yellow weather warning has been issued by the weather agency and will last from midnight tomorrow until 11:59pm tomorrow. The 23-hour alert coincides with an amber alert also covering the region. The amber warning will be in place from 6am tomorrow until 9pm tomorrow.
In their forecast for Merseyside, the Met Office state: “Storm Éowyn brings widespread disruption through the morning with gale force winds and heavy rain and snow for all. Brighter later, though staying windy with heavy showers in the north. Maximum temperature 10 °C.”
They add: “Storm Éowyn will move across the northwest of the UK on Friday, clearing to the northeast on Friday night. This will bring a spell of very strong west to southwesterly winds, with peak gusts of 60-70 mph fairly widely inland, 70-80 mph in some areas, and 80-90 mph along more exposed coasts and hills (perhaps even higher in a few locations).
“It should be noted that there may be a slight reduction in wind strength for a time as the centre of Storm Éowyn passes overhead, this most likely in parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, before winds rapidly increase again. Winds will gradually ease later on Friday.” The map below shows the areas of Merseyside covered by the yellow and amber weather warnings.
People are being advised “not to travel” on certain train routes as Storm Éowyn is set to hit Merseyside. Amber weather warnings are set to cover coastal areas such as Southport, Formby and Hoylake. The rest of Merseyside will be covered by a yellow weather warning.
National Rail has advised people looking to travel on TransPennine Express routes not to travel between Liverpool/Manchester and Scotland services and between York/Newcastle and Edinburgh.
It said services which do operate across the rest of the TransPennine Express network will run to an amended timetable and may be subject to significant disruption with short notice delays, alterations and cancellations all possible.
