Mee Japanese and Thai Street Food offers a vibrant Thai street food market atmosphere
A new restaurant has opened at the top of Bold Street serving up classic Thai cuisine and a range of eastern-inspired street food. Mee Japanese and Thai Street Food opened its doors last month on December 8.
The restaurant, which is located in the former Cabin Club building last occupied by Jimmy’s, was inspired by the bustling street food markets found in Thailand. Owners Lee Chen and Mike Liu announced the new venture in June this year as renovations began at the former burger bar which closed down last September. The restaurant offers a 20% discount to Blue Light Card holders, which is redeemable between Monday and Thursday each week.
Mee offers two menus: Thai classic rice, noodle and curry dishes, and Thai, Japanese and Chinese street food. Classics include traditional Pad Thai and pork belly, and “weeping tigers” – juicy grilled beef with a spicy dipping sauce. The street food menu, meanwhile, offers smaller plates such as chicken skewers, fish cakes, battered prawns, wontons and salads.
The menus reads: “At our restaurant you’ll experience traditional Thai dining mode of using a spoon and a fork. This combination not only makes it easy to enjoy each dish, but also reflects the unique elegance and practicality of Thai table etiquette. In Thai culture, bringing hands together in a prayer-like gesture signifies gratitude and respect. Alongside your meal, our staff will warmly greet and thank you in the traditional way, adding a touch of Thai hospitality to your experience.”
Mee is the latest development to take place within the Grade II-listed Havelock building, which was once home to one of Liverpool’s most famous nightspots, the Cabin Club. The venue is rumoured to be the inspiration for The Beatles’ song “Don’t Bother Me”, penned by George Harrison while on tour with the band in 1963.
