Call the Midwife nurse and midwife Nancy Corrigan announced she was leaving Poplar after getting engaged to her love Roger
The much-loved Call the Midwife series has returned to BBC One for its 14th season, and in the opening episode, Megan Cusack’s character, Nancy Corrigan, becomes engaged to her new beau, Roger (Conor O’Donnell). Winning over his mother proved difficult due to their religious differences.
At the episode’s close, Nancy revealed plans to leave Poplar temporarily to accept a role at Netherditch hospital. She felt it was a progressive move for herself and daughter Colette (Francesca Fullilove), and was visibly thrilled with the decision.
Roger was just as excited about the move, which brings him closer to Nancy at least until their nuptials back in Poplar. Fans are eagerly wondering if this spells the end of Nancy’s time on the show, but indications suggest she will return.
Nancy assured her Nonnatus House companions that their wedding would occur in Poplar, which she affectionately calls “home”, hinting at her temporary exit.
Before the start of the season, Meghan Cusack gave insights to the press regarding her character, affirming: “Just because she’s fallen in love, she’s not leaving us.
“There’s lots of things happening, she’s got lots going on, you know, a job offer, an engagement, an overbearing mother-in-law-to-be. So she’s got a lot going on.”
Cusack also expressed delight at exploring the romantic side of her role, which was something she didn’t initially foresee for her character.
The swift progression of their romance has some followers pondering the sincerity of Roger’s actions, voicing concerns about possible ulterior motives.
Yet, for the time being, it looks like Nancy will be returning to Poplar soon.
Social media has been abuzz with viewers fretting over the departure of their cherished nurse and midwife following her abrupt engagement.
Posting on a social platform, one fan wrote: “Wanting Nancy to have the happy ending she deserves but not wanting her and Colette to leave #CallTheMidwife.”
Another contributed: “Currently sobbing my eyes out at the fact Nancy and Colette are leaving #callthemidwife.”
“Omg is nancy going to leave? ! ? ! NOOO i love her”, chimed in someone else.
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One on Sundays at 8pm
