People have condemned an “extremely selfish” driver after an electric car caused an obstruction on a footpath. Police were on patrol in Liverpool city centre on the evening of Tuesday, January 7 when they spotted an MG car parked on the pedestrian footpath and issued a ticket.
The officers then spotted the car was being charged through the railings. Pictures shared by the Liverpool Police Facebook account showed the car parked right up to the railings on the footpath and the charging lead connected to the vehicle.
Police said they issued the driver a “traffic offence report” for causing the obstruction. This driver was not the only person to receive a ticket that night, as police said they dealt with more than 40 vehicles causing obstruction to the footway and highway across Liverpool city centre.
In a statement they said: “The owner of this vehicle has not been the brightest spark this evening. Shockingly they have caused an obstruction of the pedestrian footpath in order to charge their electric vehicle.
“Officers have used their road traffic powers and issued the vehicle with a traffic offence report. Officers have dealt with over 40 vehicles this evening for causing obstruction to the footway and highway across Liverpool city centre.”
Many flocked to the comments to express their opinions on the issue. Responding on the Liverpool ECHO app, Esy said: “Well done good to see police doing their duty.” Redarmy76 added: “They pay road tax, not pavement tax.”
Marlo2014 commented: “They should use a public charger where they don’t cause an obstruction. They know this when they purchase a car. I don’t have a diesel pump outside my house, I have to travel and use a garage – same thing I’ve done for nearly 50 years. Pavements are not for parking, end of.”
Tony8297 said: “All 40 vehicles should have been removed at the owner’s expense.” On Instagram, itshayley70 said: “I’m all for this! I think more of disabled people, especially wheelchair users and blind people, elderly, also parents with prams! This also makes the pavements dangerous due to cracks, these become loosened and in turn become trip hazards affecting everyone! Let’s not forget the taxes that go to having them repaired.”
Lisa_josephine66 added: “As a driver of many years, I just find drivers extremely selfish, parking on pavements close to junctions, single yellow lines and worst of all zig zags!!! What gives these people the right? Fine clamp and take their car and make them resit their theory test.”
Others were more sympathetic with the driver. Responding on the ECHO app, Tell the Truth said: “Unfortunately these electric vehicles were produced without a plan for the infrastructure. What can you do, the companies who produce these vehicles who make millions if not billions should be made culpable for not having a more detailed look into the pitfalls, risk assessment… someone is going to have a hell of a job sorting it out.”
