The family reported their ‘very serious’ situation to One Vision Housing at the start of December
A family of four in Merseyside claim they have been forced to use black bin bags to go to the toilet because of ongoing problems with their toilet facilities. The problems started in December when waste and sewage water began overflowing from their bathroom toilet – covering the floor and hallway and backing up into the bath tub.
Prasanna Uruthiralingam lives in Netherton with his wife and two young children and is a tenant of One Vision Housing (OVH). Prasanna’s home is on the newly built OVH estate on Braidwood Road and he and his family are happy there and generally satisfied with the service they get from their landlord.
However, in late December, Prasanna said the toilet in his property started overflowing, with waste running out onto the bathroom floor and also coming up through the bathroom plughole. He immediately contacted OVH who raised an emergency repair job with their maintenance contractor.
Prasanna said: “I reported to One Vision Housing and someone came to fix the problem three times, but finally they said they can’t fix it. Then a plumbing engineer came to fix the problem and they said they can’t do it.
“One Vision said it’s a building construction fault and said I can’t use the toilet until it gets fixed. We have had these problems for the last two weeks and over Christmas and the new year.
“I can’t control this, my wife can’t control this. It is continuously coming out from the toilet. We haven’t used the toilet for the last three days now. We are using a bin bag to go the toilet. It’s a very serious thing.
“No-one’s actually done anything yet. We don’t sleep. We are always staying in the toilet to watch it or it’s coming out. If you go to any other rooms, [toilet water] comes over onto the floor.”
One Vision Housing confirmed they are aware of the problem and have prioritised the repair. A spokesperson for One Vision Housing said: “We continue to work with our customer to resolve the issue.
“A thorough investigation has been conducted, including the use of CCTV to trace and identify the root cause of the blockage, which we anticipate will be resolved on Thursday January 2.”
As of Thursday evening January 2 Mr Uruthiralingam confirmed the repair to the toilet had been completed and is hopeful it will be the end of the family’s nightmare.
