President-elect Donald Trump has expressed sympathy with Russia’s position that Ukraine should not join NATO, speaking at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Tuesday. The incoming president criticised the Biden administration’s stance on Ukrainian NATO membership, suggesting that Russia’s concerns about having NATO “right on their doorstep” were understandable.”A big part of the problem is, Russia – for many, many years, long before Putin – said, ‘You could never have NATO involved with Ukraine.’ That’s been, like, written in stone,” Trump said at the Florida press conference. He directly challenged President Biden’s position on NATO expansion, stating: “Somewhere along the line Biden said, ‘No. They should be able to join NATO.'”Trump’s aides and allies generally oppose Ukrainian NATO membership, viewing it as an unnecessary provocation towards Moscow. The President-elect expressed confidence in his ability to end the Ukraine conflict swiftly after taking office on January 20.”I hope to have six months. No, I would think, I hope long before six months,” Trump said when asked about resolving the war. This marks a shift from his earlier campaign rhetoric, where he had suggested he could solve the conflict even before assuming office.LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:’Fun-loving’ British medic who volunteered for Ukraine killed in skirmish with Putin’s armyRussian helicopter shot down by Ukrainian sea drone as first attack of its kind leaves Putin rockedPutin APOLOGISES to Azerbaijan over ‘tragic incident’ admitting ‘air defence was active’Trump revealed he would not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin before his inauguration, despite indicating Putin’s willingness for such a meeting.”I know that Putin would like to meet,” Trump said. “I don’t think it’s appropriate that I meet until after the 20th which I hate.”He expressed frustration at the delay, adding: “Every day people are being – many, many young people are being killed.”In his closing remarks, Trump emphasised the human cost of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.”Russia is losing a lot of young people, and so is Ukraine, and it should have never been started,” the President-elect said. His comments underscored his stated determination to bring the conflict to a swift conclusion after taking office, whilst acknowledging the continuing casualties on both sides.Trump has also caused a stir after offering to make Canada the 51st US state. The incoming 47th President is also hoping to buy Greenland from Denmark.
