People from across the city are expected to turn out to say their final goodbyes to the “Queen of Old Swan” as her funeral date has been announced. Cathy Williamson died peacefully in the care home where she lived on December 23.
The 85-year-old, from Old Swan, who was known in the community for “wearing her little poncho” and browsing charity shops with her shopping trolley, was loved by many and became “like family” to some. Following her death, dozens of tributes have been paid to the ‘nan’ figure, who gave the “best hugs”.
Veronica McClure, 47, from Knotty Ash, previously paid tribute to Cathy, who she had known since she was a child. She told the ECHO how the “queen“ was one of a kind, she said: “I can’t explain in words what she was like.
“I have got so many memories with her, she would come and visit me everyday. She was very well known in my area. She was unbelievable, she would sing, dance and was always a joyful person with a big heart for everyone.”
The funeral will take place on Thursday, February 13, at St Oswald’s Church on Oswald’s Street in Old Swan. The service will start at 1.45pm and then people will gather at Anfield Crematorium from 3.20pm afterwards. The funeral cortege will be led by a horse and carriage.
Veronica, who has organised the funeral for Cathy, said she wants to give her the send off she deserves. She said: “She was the queen of Old Swan, the best of the best.
“She was one of a kind, so lovely and would give her time to so many people so I’m hoping the community comes together and gives her their time of her last journey.
“I’m hoping it [the funeral] will bring Old Swan, Broadway and Fazakerley, where she spent most of her time and was so well know, together, she will have all her friends from all over together. I just want her to have the send off she deserves.”
Cathy was a huge animal lover, who loved dogs and Veronica is asking for any funeral donations to be made to Dogs Trust.
