Coronation Street’s Sean Tully, played by Antony Cotton, might be on the brink of a surprising departure, according to fan theories. The character, who has been a staple on the cobbles since his introduction in 2003, has become one of the soap’s most cherished figures over the years. Sean, the barman at Rovers Return, has been involved in numerous major plotlines, from a series of unsuccessful love affairs to becoming a father to Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne).

Last year, Dylan was tormented by Mason Radcliffe (Luca Toolan), a troublemaker who was subsequently sent to a Young Offenders centre. Mason later returned to the street, determined to change his ways. However, this week saw a tragic turn of events when Mason was stabbed by his own brothers and died. The situation worsened for Dylan as it was revealed that Mason was killed with Dylan’s zombie knife, which he had brought along before Mason’s death, reports Lancs Live.

In Wednesday’s episode (January 8), Dylan confessed to his father Sean that the knife used to murder Mason was his. In desperation, Dylan pleaded with Sean to help him flee, but Sean turned him into the police, believing it was the right thing to do.

Following a gruelling interview at the police station, Dylan was released on bail. However, it’s clear that his troubles are far from over. Despite telling the truth, Dylan could still face prison time for possessing a bladed weapon at a crime scene.

Now, as Dylan’s departure from the soap to serve a prison sentence seems imminent, fans believe Sean might follow suit. On a Corrie Facebook fan page, one viewer speculated: “Dylan going to Young Offenders for possession of a knife – would mean the character going.”

“That then leaves Sean hanging – do they keep him or depict him moving closer to the Young Offenders to keep in contact with Dylan? Certainly I think Dylan’s mother may well pressure him never to return to Weatherfield. It’s not exactly been a good move for Dylan.” Another fan concurred: “I agree, I can see Sean leaving to be closer to wherever Dylan goes.”

Moreover, some viewers have proposed a theory that could result in Sean’s death. One suggested: “What if he gets murdered / killed off though? Hear me out, some of Mason’s family could be out for revenge and end up killing Sean? ” Another responded: “With all the exits happening it wouldn’t surprise me.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
