Beijing Olympics men’s silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama and three-time defending women’s world champion Kaori Sakamoto won Friday’s short programs on the first day of the national figure skating championships.
The 21-year-old Kagiyama, who finished second at the Grand Prix Final behind U.S. “Quad God” Ilia Malinin earlier this month, scored 92.05 points, 1.74 ahead of second-place Rio Nakata, 16.
