There has been major disruption to rail services on Merseyside today after a signalling problem caused trains to be suspended. Services between Hunts Cross and Liverpool are currently suspended and rail replacement buses are in operation between Moorfields and Hunts Cross.
The disruption is expected to continue until 5pm today, December 29. In an announcement on X, Merseyrail said the issue stems from a signals problem at Brunswick Station, which means “no services can go past”.
A Merseyrail representative said on the social media site that there is a train on the platform at Hunts Cross “that will be there until the signal is fixed”. She added that “Network Rail are onsite” dealing with the problem.
An announcement on the Merseyrail website said: “Due to signalling problems at Hunts Cross the Hunts Cross line is disrupted. Disruption is expected until 17:00 29/12. Train services to Hunts Cross will be terminated at and started back from Liverpool Ctrl Northern.
“Replacement road transport services are conveying passengers between Moorfields and Hunts Cross in both directions until further notice.”
Everton fans hoping to get to the match against Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park by train were unhappy with the disruption. One Toffee writing on X said rail replacement buses were “not good enough”, adding, “that doesn’t get me to the match. Takes twice as long. The trains should be running. It’s completely unacceptable.”
