Antonio was rushed to hospital after his Ferrari crashed during Storm Darragh
West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture after he was involved in a car crash on Saturday.
Antonio will continue to be monitored in hospital over the coming days, his football club announced in a statement on X on Sunday afternoon.
West Ham said: ‘Everyone at the Club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the football family at large for the overwhelming support shown since yesterday’s news, as well as extending a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michail in the immediate aftermath of the incident, and the medical team who continue to aid him in his recovery.’
This health update comes after the club confirmed yesterday that the striker was in a stable condition after a crash in Epping, Essex, during Storm Darragh, that resulted in a Ferrari being smashed.
There were also unconfirmed reports that Antonio was airlifted to hospital.
Essex Fire Service said in a statement about the crash: ‘Crews were called to High Road, Epping, at 1.02pm this afternoon after reports of a road traffic collision involving one car.
‘In arrival, firefighters reported that a man was trapped in his car and worked to release him by 1.45pm. The casualty was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.’
Essex Police said that officers are ‘investigating’ the collision and ‘are asking for witnesses and dash cam footage’.
The long-time West Ham favourite among supporters first joined the club in 2015 and has scored 83 goals since, helping them to win the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023.
West Ham United’s next game is against Wolves at home on Monday night.
