‘As bad as you can imagine’: George Conway warns Trump Cabinet could ‘destroy the country’

Some of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet appointments so far have proven to be so extreme that even members of the Senate Republican Conference have expressed doubt they’ll all be confirmed. And one conservative attorney is cautioning Americans to take them all seriously.In a recent interview with CNN host Wolf Blitzer, George Conway — the former husband of Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway — said that Trump’s controversial picks to head federal agencies are “completely unqualified.” He specifically tore into former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as a “bad guy,” and noted he has a lack of actual experience as a lawyer.”His only qualification to be attorney general of the United States is his own experience with the criminal justice system,” Conway said, adding that he had been investigated by the Department of Justice for sex trafficking (though the DOJ later declined to charge him). “He only practiced law at a small law firm in Florida for a year… That, to me, is not a good qualification.”READ MORE: ‘Likes them underage’: Right-wing journalist unleashes on ‘vile sex pest’ Matt GaetzBlitzer also asked Conway about Trump’s decision to elevate former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) to be the next Director of National Intelligence and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the potential next Secretary of Health and Human Services. Conway responded that he doubted all three would be confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate, but added the caveat: “I don’t think you can lose money betting on the spinelessness of Republican senators.”Conway may be right in that Trump’s Cabinet will be difficult even for Senate Republicans to swallow. The Washington Post interviewed several U.S. senators about Gaetz in particular on Wednesday, and answers about his chances of being confirmed ranged from shock and outright disapproval to noncommittal head-shaking. He told Blitzer that even though Trump won the Electoral College and the popular vote, it doesn’t give him free rein to appoint an extreme Cabinet.”He doesn’t have a mandate to engage in the sort of destructive behavior that he has engaged in the last 24 hours with these three picks,” Conway said. “These three picks are truly as bad as you can imagine.
