Berlin/Dubai: In a significant move towards sustainable aviation, Emirates has joined AIREG (Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany), becoming the first international airline to do so. This partnership was announced at the ILA Berlin 2024 airshow. A non-profit organization founded in 2011, AIREG brings together companies and organizations from various sectors, including research, science, and industry, to promote the development and use of renewable energy sources in aviation. Their goal is to help the aviation industry achieve ambitious CO2 reduction targets.
By joining AIREG, Emirates strengthens its commitment to developing and using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). They will collaborate with AIREG to increase SAF production in Germany, adding to their recent SAF initiatives.
Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
The partnership was signed by Emirates’ North & Central Europe Vice President Volker Greiner and AIREG’s Chairman Siegfried Knecht. Germany’s Federal Government Coordinator of Aerospace Policy, Dr. Anna Christmann, also attended the signing ceremony.
Emirates President Sir Tim Clark expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the need for affordable, large-scale production of SAF. He believes AIREG’s leadership will be crucial in achieving this goal.
Siegfried Knecht welcomed Emirates as a valuable partner, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between airlines, policymakers, and various industry players to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Emirates’ Longstanding Sustainability Efforts
Germany is a key market for Emirates, and the airline has been operating flights there since 1987. Emirates is already using SAF on flights departing from Amsterdam, London Heathrow, Paris, Lyon, Oslo, and Singapore.
Last year, they partnered with Shell Aviation to introduce SAF into Dubai Airport fueling systems for the first time.
Emirates Showcases Sustainability at ILA Berlin
As the world’s largest A380 operator, Emirates displayed an A380 aircraft at ILA Berlin for the seventh consecutive year. This reinforces their commitment to the leading European aerospace exhibition.
Furthermore, the return flight from Berlin to Dubai will use blended fuel containing SAF, showcasing their active contribution to reducing carbon emissions at the event.
