London, UK. 6 March, 2024: Formula E roared into the record books with a landmark achievement. Saudi Arabian racing driver Reem Al Aboud, a pioneer for women in motorsport, became the first driver to break the single-seater acceleration record previously held by Formula 1. Behind the wheel of the GENBETA electric race car, Al Aboud clocked a blistering 0-60mph in just 2.49 seconds, surpassing F1’s benchmark of 2.6 seconds.
This feat not only showcases the immense potential of electric racing technology but also underscores Formula E’s dedication to innovation and diversity. The GENBETA program utilizes an “unlocked” GEN3 race car, co-developed by Formula E and the FIA, and further enhanced by key championship partners.
Al Aboud’s journey with Formula E began in 2018, making her the first and youngest Saudi woman to pilot a Formula E car. This historic moment coincided with the lifting of the driving ban for women in Saudi Arabia.
The GENBETA car itself represents the cutting edge of electric racing. Built upon the 400kW GEN3 platform and powered by ABB, it benefits from optimizations from partners like SABIC and Hankook. Additionally, Google Cloud’s generative AI provided real-time telemetry data, empowering Al Aboud to push the boundaries of electric motorsport and achieve this record-breaking feat.
Further amplifying the message of empowerment, young Saudi girls shared inspirational messages for Al Aboud, displayed on the car’s livery. This initiative aligns with the expansion of the FIA Girls on Track program, which aims to inspire young women to pursue careers in motorsport through workshops, mentorship opportunities, and university talks. The program’s expansion ensures over 2,000 girls can participate across the entire season.
Formula E’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond Girls on Track with the launch of the NXT Gen Cup, a new racing series featuring both male and female drivers. The focus now shifts to Season 10, with the upcoming São Paulo E-Prix on March 16th. Jaguar TCS Racing will be looking to maintain their lead in both driver and team championships.
