Stuttgart, Germany: In a bold move, The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has become the first motorsport team to sign The Climate Pledge (https://www.theclimatepledge.com/us/en), an international coalition of over 465 organizations committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 – a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement (https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/paris-agreement) goals. This ambitious pledge signifies the team’s dedication to tackling climate change and building a more sustainable future for our planet.
Full Throttle Transparency
Transparency is the fuel that powers progress. As a Climate Pledge (https://www.theclimatepledge.com/us/en) signatory, the F1 Team commits to full disclosure of their decarbonization strategies and offset investments. These offsets must be quantifiable, meaning they demonstrably remove carbon from the atmosphere; real, ensuring the avoided emissions are permanent; permanent, guaranteeing the carbon stays sequestered long-term; and socially beneficial, supporting positive social and environmental impact alongside climate action. Recognizing the impact beyond their own operations, the team has assessed their entire supply chain emissions. This transparency sets a benchmark for the industry and lays the groundwork for comprehensive Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) – aligned targets aimed at Net Zero across the entire value chain.
Net Zero pit stop in 2030
The team is accelerating its pit crew to achieve complete Net Zero emissions for their race operations by 2030. This ambitious target goes beyond the sport’s current regulations, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in motorsports sustainability.
Double green flag for innovation
Pioneering the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel and HVO100 biofuel demonstrates the team’s commitment to alternative fuels. These bold steps have already reduced emissions significantly, paving the way for cleaner racing in the future.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team said: “Signing The Climate Pledge is another demonstration of our intent to perform to the highest standard on sustainability. We want to win through sustainable high performance, and to win within the societal and planetary boundaries which exist. The ability to collaborate with many of these leading organisations, striving for the same goal, offers considerable benefits for all signatories.”
Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team said: “Joining The Climate Pledge consolidates our commitment to sustainability and our existing strategy to achieve Race Team controlled Net Zero by 2030 and Net Zero across all scopes by 2040. We have already taken important steps towards Net Zero through our biofuel initiatives and our investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel. With sustainability embedded throughout our team, we are on track to meet our targets and helping our suppliers to go further and faster in achieving theirs.”
