In a remarkable incident in East London, a newborn baby girl was discovered inside a shopping bag by a passer-by. Police have reported that the infant, temporarily named Elsa, was found in Newham on Thursday night and was less than an hour old at the time of discovery. Elsa, who is believed to be a black or mixed-race child, is now safe and in good health.
The baby was discovered near the junction of Greenway and High Street South by a dog walker who heard her crying. The passer-by’s quick action to keep Elsa warm with blankets until paramedics arrived played a crucial role in saving the newborn’s life. The Metropolitan Police praised the passer-by for their life-saving efforts.
The circumstances leading up to Elsa being left in the shopping bag remain unclear, and police are unsure how long she was there before being found. However, they believe she was discovered reasonably quickly. The temperature in London on Thursday night dropped to as low as -4C, according to the Met Office.
Police efforts are now focused on locating Elsa’s mother, who they believe will need immediate medical attention. Chief Superintendent Simon Crick of the Metropolitan Police expressed deep concern for the mother’s well-being, stating that she would have undergone a traumatic experience and needs urgent medical care.
Chief Superintendent Crick expressed gratitude to the public members who stayed at the scene to assist and appealed to Elsa’s mother to contact the police. He assured that trained medics and specialist officers are prepared to provide support and urged the mother to reach out for help.
