Mexico City, Mexico: Thrilling Start to Season 10: The 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship roared to life in Mexico City, and TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein celebrates his victory in the Mexico City E-Prix, holding the checkered flag aloft as confetti rains down stealing the show with a masterful performance. Clinching the first win of the season, Wehrlein solidified his dominance at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Starting from Julius Baer Pole Position, Wehrlein led the pack from the green flag, showcasing his renowned prowess on the circuit. Though briefly challenged during an attack mode skirmish under Full Course Yellow conditions, the German-Mauritian driver maintained his composure and showcased his resilience to reclaim the lead and ultimately crossing the finish line first.
Porsche Powertrain Reigns
Wehrlein’s victory wasn’t just a personal triumph; it was a testament to the Porsche powertrain’s strength. This marks the third consecutive Mexico City E-Prix with a Porsche-powered driver on the top step, solidifying the German manufacturer’s place as a frontrunner in the electric motorsport world.
The race saw other impressive performances, with Sébastien Buemi of Envision Racing and Jaguar TCS Racing’s new signing Nick Cassidy joining Wehrlein on the podium. Maximilian Guenther of Maserati MSG Racing and Mitch Evans of Jaguar TCS Racing also put on a show, with Evans engaging in a thrilling defensive battle against Jean-Éric Vergne of DS PENSKE, who climbed impressively from 10th to 6th.
Intense Competition
The pack was close throughout the race, with Jake Hughes of NEOM McLaren Formula E Team, Stoffel Vandoorne of DS PENSKE, championship-defender Jake Dennis, and Norman Nato (both Andretti Formula E) all navigating through the field to secure valuable points in the top ten.
The race was relatively clean, with only one interruption on lap 9 when Robin Frijns found the wall at the Foro Sol exit. This triggered a Full Course Yellow, momentarily delaying Wehrlein’s attack on Buemi but ultimately adding to the drama and excitement of the race.
With Wehrlein leading the Drivers’ standings and TAG Heuer Porsche at the top of the Teams’ championship, the 2024 Formula E season promises to be an electrifying one. The next stop is Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, on January 27th, where the battle for the championship will intensify.
