The trend of European football players transferring to Saudi Arabian clubs persisted this winter. Al-Hilal recently confirmed the signing of Renan Lodi from French club Marseille. The Brazilian, who also holds Italian citizenship, joined the Saudi Arabian team in a deal worth 23 million euros.
Lodi’s transfer to Al-Hilal marks a significant move in his career. He previously transferred to Marseille from Atletico Madrid last summer for 20.6 million euros, where he made 23 appearances across all competitions and contributed one assist. Before joining Atletico Madrid in 2019 for 21.75 million euros, Lodi played for Nottingham Forest and began his career at Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense.
This move is part of a broader trend where Arab clubs have been investing heavily in acquiring players, though Lodi’s transfer fee is relatively modest compared to other recent deals. By securing Lodi’s services until 2027, Al-Hilal aims to strengthen its bid for the championship title.
Interestingly, some star players are leaving Saudi Arabia. Jordan Henderson, for instance, has already moved to Ajax, where he joins Benjamin Tahirovic. As the summer transfer window approaches, the football world anticipates more high-profile moves, potentially leading to a particularly dynamic transfer season.
