The office of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed disappointment on Monday regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance against the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state. This statement comes in light of the ongoing debate over the future creation of an independent Palestinian state, a concept that Netanyahu recently opposed.
Over the weekend, Netanyahu stated his refusal to compromise on “full Israeli security control of all territory west of the Jordan River.” This position stands in contrast to the views of US President Joe Biden and represents a significant divergence in the approach to resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
Responding to Netanyahu’s remarks, Sunak’s spokesman conveyed the UK’s position, emphasizing the importance of a two-state solution. According to the spokesman, the UK believes that a viable and sovereign Palestinian state coexisting alongside a safe and secure Israel is the optimal path to enduring peace. The two-state solution has been a cornerstone of international efforts in resolving the Israel-Palestinian conflict, although the peace process has been stagnant for several years.
The UK has consistently supported Israel’s right to defend itself, especially following the deadly assault by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7. Additionally, Sunak’s government has advocated for Israel to adhere to humanitarian law and called for pauses in the Gaza Strip conflict to facilitate aid delivery. The UK’s stance includes the pursuit of a “sustainable ceasefire,” contingent on the release of hostages by Hamas, to minimize civilian casualties.
The spokesman highlighted the challenging journey towards recovery and lasting security in both the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel. The UK remains steadfast in its long-term support for the two-state solution, committing to uphold this approach as long as necessary.
