In a recent televised press conference, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the country’s unwavering resolve in its conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. As the conflict reaches its 100th day, Netanyahu’s strong statements come amidst various challenges and military strategies being employed in the region.
Netanyahu made clear that Israel would not be deterred by international bodies or alliances opposed to its actions. His comments referenced a case in the International Court of Justice at The Hague, which alleges that Israel’s operations breach the UN Genocide Convention. He also addressed the coalition of Iran-backed groups in the Middle East, known as the Axis of Resistance.
Detailing the progress of the military operation, Netanyahu stated that the Israeli forces had significantly weakened Hamas’s capabilities in Gaza. However, he mentioned the continuing danger in northern Gaza, indicating that displaced residents would not be able to return home soon. This stance is based on Netanyahu’s interpretation of international law regarding the safety of returning populations amidst ongoing conflict.
Further, the Prime Minister discussed the strategic importance of the “Philadelphi Corridor,” a key area along Gaza’s border with Egypt. He indicated that various options, including a potential military takeover of the area, are being considered to isolate Hamas. However, a final decision on this matter is yet to be made.
