Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza and its regional implications at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos. He underscored the connection between Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and the war in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for a ceasefire.
During his speech, Prince Faisal emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to de-escalation in Gaza as a key priority. He also discussed the possibility of Saudi Arabia recognizing Israel, contingent on reaching a comprehensive peace agreement that includes Palestinian statehood.
Prince Faisal stated, “We agree that regional peace includes peace for Israel, but that could only happen through peace for the Palestinians through a Palestinian state.” He confirmed that Saudi Arabia would recognize Israel if a broader political agreement, encompassing Palestinian statehood, was achieved.
The Foreign Minister also mentioned ongoing efforts with the U.S. administration to secure regional peace through the establishment of a Palestinian state. This initiative is particularly relevant in the context of the current Gaza conflict.
The Palestinians seek statehood in territories captured by Israel during the 1967 war, with East Jerusalem as their capital. However, negotiations facilitated by the U.S. have been stalled for over a decade, hampered by issues such as Israeli settlement expansion and disagreements between Palestinian authorities and Hamas, which does not recognize Israel’s right to exist.
Prince Faisal reiterated Saudi Arabia’s dedication to peace in the region, stating, “There is a pathway toward a much better future for the region, for the Palestinians, and for Israel, that is peace, and we are fully committed to that.” He advocated for a ceasefire as the starting point for lasting peace, emphasizing justice for the Palestinian people as a critical component.
The conflict in Gaza escalated when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, leading to significant casualties and hostage-taking. Israel’s subsequent military response has resulted in widespread destruction in Gaza and a high number of casualties, according to Palestinian health officials.
The ongoing conflict has heightened concerns about broader regional instability, with tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border and attacks by pro-Iranian militias in Iraq. Additionally, Houthi disruptions in the Red Sea have been linked to the Gaza conflict, with the group vowing to continue until Israel ceases its military actions in Gaza.
