Golriz Ghahraman, a Green Party representative in New Zealand, has resigned following a series of shoplifting allegations. Ghahraman, who gained recognition as the first refugee to become a member of the island nation’s parliament in 2017, is accused of stealing from multiple high-end boutiques.
The Iranian-born politician and human rights lawyer, who has faced significant pressures including threats of violence since her election, addressed the allegations in a statement. While not directly commenting on the specific incidents, Ghahraman cited mental health issues and work-related stress as factors leading to her “completely out of character” behavior. She expressed remorse, acknowledging that her actions fell short of the standards expected from elected officials. Ghahraman emphasized that her behavior, which she cannot rationalize, aligns with an extreme stress response and unrecognized trauma, as indicated by a mental health professional.
The New Zealand Police are investigating an alleged shoplifting incident at Scotties Boutique in Ponsonby, Auckland, that occurred in December. However, they did not confirm if the investigation involves Ghahraman. Another incident under investigation by the New Zealand Herald took place on December 23 last year.
In response to the situation, Green Party co-leaders James Shaw and Marama Davidson issued a joint statement. They acknowledged the high standards expected of Green MPs and recognized Ghahraman’s extreme distress. The co-leaders expressed support for her decision to resign, noting her acceptance of responsibility and apology.
Ghahraman has expressed gratitude for the kindness and empathy shown by the staff at Scotties Boutique amid these challenging circumstances.
