In a pronounced act of protest, South Africa has recalled its ambassador to Israel in response to the heavy military offensive in the Gaza Strip, which the South African government has termed a “genocide.” This step comes alongside a warning of potential action against the Israeli ambassador to South Africa due to his recent critical comments on South Africa’s position regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Specifics about these comments have not been disclosed.
The recent warfare was ignited by an attack from Hamas on October 7, leading to a substantial death toll, with Gaza’s health ministry reporting over 10,000 Palestinian fatalities as a result of the Israeli military campaign.
Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the minister in the presidency, announced the full withdrawal of South African diplomats from Tel Aviv, expressing the cabinet’s objections to the Israeli ambassador’s remarks on the Israeli government’s actions. Measures are being considered to address his conduct through appropriate diplomatic channels.
Further intensifying the diplomatic strain, Ntshavheni remarked on the untenable position of the Israeli ambassador in South Africa. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators have taken to the streets, urging the South African government to take more drastic action and expel the Israeli ambassador altogether.
Amid these developments, International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor expressed grave concerns about the loss of life in Palestinian territories, describing Israel’s actions as collective punishment.
The South African government’s action aligns with its ruling party, the African National Congress’s, long-standing solidarity with Palestine, calling for an immediate halt to the violence and for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza. The international reaction has seen similar moves by other countries, with Chile, Colombia, and Honduras recalling their ambassadors, and Bolivia severing its diplomatic ties with Israel.
