London Tube Driver Investigated for Chanting Pro-Palestinian Slogans

British Transport Police (BTP) and Transport for London (TfL) are looking into an incident involving a London Tube driver who is believed to have chanted pro-Palestinian slogans while on duty. An online video, which has yet to be verified, appears to show the driver on the Central line using the train’s public address system to chant “free Palestine”. Some passengers, reportedly on their way to a pro-Palestinian demonstration, joined in the chants.

This incident occurred on the same day as a massive pro-Palestinian march took place in central London, drawing an estimated 100,000 participants in a show of support for Palestinian civilians. In the controversial video, the driver is heard offering well-wishes for the day and asking passengers to keep “all those people” in their prayers.

This comes in the wake of recent tensions following an attack on Israel by Hamas on 7 October, leading to Israel implementing a blockade and cutting off vital supplies like fuel, water, and electricity to Gaza. Palestinian officials report that since then, over 4,000 individuals have lost their lives in Gaza. The UN has also highlighted the displacement of approximately 1.4 million Gazans, with more than half a million seeking refuge in UN shelters.

In light of the intense emotions surrounding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the Met Police recently updated their guidelines pertaining to specific pro-Palestinian chants.

Sean O’Callaghan, BTP assistant chief constable, has acknowledged the circulating video and said they are in collaboration with TfL to probe the situation. TfL stated its dedication to ensuring the safety of everyone on its network.
