Liverpool’s parent company, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has entered into an agreement to sell a minority share in the club to Dynasty Equity, a prominent sports investment firm. The deal’s value fluctuates between £82m and £164m.
This transaction concludes FSG’s quest for additional investment while maintaining its major share in Liverpool. The primary objective behind the new funds is to settle the club’s bank liabilities.
Mike Gordon, the president of FSG, expressed his unwavering commitment to Liverpool, stating, “We’ve always been open to the right investment partner for Liverpool. Our goal has been to ensure the club’s long-term fiscal health and to position it for future expansion.”
Despite losing £100m in revenue during the Covid-19 crisis, Liverpool invested £50m in a new Kirkby training ground in 2020 and allocated £12m to buy back their previous Melwood training base for the women’s team. Furthermore, the Anfield Road Stand’s ongoing enhancements are estimated to cost around £80m. This is on top of the £114m Main Stand unveiled in 2016.
In player acquisitions, the Reds recently spent approximately £145m, welcoming talents such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch. The primary intent behind the fresh capital from Dynasty Equity is to offset the debt incurred from infrastructure initiatives rather than finance future player signings.
Gordon expressed enthusiasm for this collaboration, saying, “Our partnership with Dynasty will fortify the club’s financial standing and support our aspirations for enduring success, both on and off the field.”
Having acquired Liverpool for £300m in 2010, FSG had hinted in November 2022 about welcoming new shareholders. This latest investment agreement fulfills that intention.
K. Don Cornwell, CEO of Dynasty, commented on the occasion, emphasizing Liverpool’s iconic stature in football. He noted, “Liverpool boasts a passionate fanbase and a remarkable global presence. We’re honored to collaborate with FSG and tap into the club’s vast growth potential.”
