17 Dead and Others Missing in India Bridge Collapse

At least 17 lives have been tragically lost and others are feared missing following the collapse of a railway bridge that was under construction. The calamity struck near the town of Sairang in Mizoram state, India.

Reports from local media indicate that the catastrophe occurred while around 40 workers were present at the construction site. Part of the bridge gave way, leading to this devastating outcome. Authorities are still working to determine the precise cause behind the bridge’s collapse. To shed light on the matter, the state-run railway authority has initiated an investigation into the incident.

Zoramthanga, the chief minister of Mizoram, expressed that emergency responders have managed to recover 17 bodies up to this point. Local community members have rallied together to assist in the ongoing rescue operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office issued a statement affirming that comprehensive support is being extended to all those affected by this tragedy. In a gesture of condolence, the government will provide a sum of approximately 200,000 rupees (£1,900; $2,400) to the families of the deceased.

It is sadly not uncommon for accidents to occur at construction sites of this nature in India. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the hazards faced by workers and communities in such scenarios.

Tragedies of this scale underscore the importance of stringent safety measures and thorough oversight to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
