The Premier League is conducting an investigation into potential financial rule violations by Chelsea FC during Roman Abramovich’s ownership of the club. The investigation comes after the US-led consortium that acquired Chelsea reported the club to both UEFA and the Premier League following their takeover last year.
The consortium, which owns the club, alerted the authorities regarding possible rule breaches, and the investigation could lead to penalties such as fines or points deductions if violations are confirmed.
This follows UEFA’s recent announcement that it fined Chelsea €10 million (£8.6 million) for submitting incomplete financial information for the years 2012 to 2019.
Chelsea FC has refrained from commenting on the matter.
Roman Abramovich’s nearly two-decade ownership of Chelsea concluded in May 2022, and the club was sold in a £4.25 billion deal to a consortium primarily backed by Clearlake Capital, a Californian investment company. The group’s key figure is Todd Boehly, a part-owner of the LA Dodgers. Abramovich’s tenure had earlier faced scrutiny in relation to his connections to Russian President Vladimir Putin, leading to sanctions imposed by the UK government.
