Heavy rain triggered flooding and mudslides in Shaanxi Province, leading to the deaths of at least 21 people. The torrential rainfall lasted approximately two hours and caused rocks to fall, exacerbating the damage. Two homes were washed away, and roads, power lines, and communication infrastructure were significantly affected.
More than 180 people were evacuated from Weiziping, a mountainside village near the province’s capital, Xi’an. Fourteen rescue teams comprising 980 rescuers were dispatched to the area for evacuation and infrastructure repair. A command center was established in Xi’an to coordinate the rescue operations and deployment of resources.
Efforts to repair infrastructure were undertaken swiftly, with three heavily damaged sections of National Highway 210 already repaired, and power restored to over 850 homes. The severity of the situation prompted the Xi’an meteorological center to raise its weather alert to the highest level.
The heavy rainfall follows other recent weather events in China. Super Typhoon Doksuri brought heavy rainfall, causing flooding and deaths, including at least 20 fatalities in Beijing. Additionally, heavy rain earlier in July led to the deaths of 15 people in southwestern China.
