A well-known BBC presenter, whose identity has not been revealed, is facing fresh allegations in addition to the accusation of paying a teenager for explicit photos. The presenter is now accused of stripping down to his underwear during a video call with the youth. The mother of the teenager said she was shocked when her child showed her a screenshot of the video chat, in which the presenter was sitting in his boxer shorts on a sofa at his home. The mother also alleged overhearing the presenter using foul language when speaking to her child on the phone.
The Sun newspaper previously reported that the presenter had paid over £35,000 to the youth in exchange for “sexual pictures.” The presenter allegedly started requesting images when the teenager was 17 years old and continued making payments since then. The BBC has launched an investigation into the matter, and the presenter is currently off-air. However, the presenter has not been suspended and is believed to still be receiving his six-figure salary in full.
The allegations have sparked widespread speculation on social media regarding the presenter’s identity, prompting several BBC stars, including Jeremy Vine and Gary Lineker, to publicly deny that they are the individual in question.
Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport committee, expressed concern about the BBC’s handling of the claims and emphasized the need for TV companies to have robust systems in place to prevent abuse of power by their stars. Former Home Secretary Priti Patel called for a full and transparent investigation, criticizing what she perceived as a “derisory” response from the BBC.
The BBC spokesperson stated that the allegations are taken very seriously, and they have processes in place to address such matters. They acknowledged the need for further investigation and examination of the claims, and they continue to actively seek more information from those who have come forward. The spokesperson assured that any new information, including that provided by newspapers, would be acted upon appropriately in line with internal processes.
