Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has revealed the establishment of a new artificial intelligence startup called xAI. The company comprises a team of engineers with backgrounds in companies like OpenAI and Google. Musk has previously voiced his belief that advancements in AI should be halted and called for regulation in the field.
The primary objective of xAI, according to the company’s website, is to “understand the true nature of the universe.” However, specific details about funding, the company’s focus on artificial intelligence, and its objectives remain undisclosed.
xAI will host a Twitter Spaces chat on Friday, potentially shedding more light on its aims and initiatives. This announcement comes after Musk’s association with OpenAI, the organization behind the development of the popular language model ChatGPT, became strained. Musk criticized ChatGPT for its perceived liberal bias and expressed concerns about its transformation from a nonprofit, open-source entity to a for-profit, closed-source one with ties to Microsoft.
In March, Musk joined an open letter calling for a pause to “Giant AI Experiments,” emphasizing the need for AI safety measures. He has long advocated for the establishment of a regulatory body overseeing AI to ensure public safety. Additionally, Musk has raised concerns about the data used by AI companies, particularly regarding the scraping of vast amounts of data from platforms like Twitter without adequate compensation.
