French footballer Benjamin Mendy returned to football after two years.
This 29-year-old has today become a new member of Ligue 1 side Lorient, with whom he has signed a two-year contract. Benjamin Mendy continues his football career for two years after the trial where numerous women accused him of rape. The unfortunate left-back was suspended by his former club Manchester City, spent a long time behind bars, only to be found innocent and acquitted of all charges a few days ago. Mendy was released by City when his contract expired at the end of June, last playing for the club in August 2021.
He received several offers, but he decided to chose to return to the French Ligue 1, signing a two-year contract with Lorient. After the French footballer was freed, the Dutch footballer Memphis Depay decided to speak out, who rightly wonders who will now take Benjamin Mendy’s side. “All the charges have been dropped and what will we do now? Who will help this brother heal his wounds? Who will be responsible for the damage and defamation? Who will restore his career?”, writes Depay and continues: “It takes many years to become a professional and now what? I never
wanted to touch on this subject because I didn’t know all the details, but I talked to him once when he was behind bars and I played against him. I saw no evil in this man’s eyes man.”
Mendy started his career in Le Havre, then played for Marseille and Monaco, and in 2017 he became a member of Manchester City. He won three titles with City and was part of France’s World Cup-winning squad in 2018 . Mendy, became the Premier League’s most expensive defender when City paid £52m to Monaco for him in 2017. He played 10 games for the French national team between 2017 and 2019.
