In a horrifying incident at the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany, a 21-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being attacked and thrown from a hill on Wednesday. Prosecutors have revealed that the victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, died overnight after being forcefully pushed approximately 50 meters into a gorge. Her 22-year-old friend, who bravely tried to intervene, was also pushed by the assailant and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital for serious injuries.
German police have apprehended a 30-year-old American man in connection with the attack. After initially fleeing the scene, the suspect was captured on Wednesday following an extensive manhunt involving more than 25 vehicles. He was taken to a nearby police station in Fuessen, Bavaria state.
Authorities state that the man is believed to have encountered the two women, reported by German media to be American citizens, on a trail near the Marienbrücke bridge, a popular viewpoint for castle visitors. Under the pretext that the way to the bridge was challenging, he led them to a hidden trail, where he launched the assault on the 21-year-old woman. When the 22-year-old attempted to intervene, the attacker choked her and pushed her down a steep slope.
According to police, it is presumed that an attempted sexual offense against the 21-year-old victim took place during the attack. The woman tragically came to rest approximately 50 meters away from her injured friend. Despite being airlifted to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries. The injured friend, described as being in a serious condition, was responsive when discovered by authorities.
The suspect appeared in court at the Kempten District Court on Thursday, where an investigating judge issued an arrest warrant, and the man was remanded into custody. Senior public prosecutor Thomas Hormann stated that the investigation into the incident was in its early stages.
Neuschwanstein Castle, a renowned tourist attraction in Germany, draws over 1.3 million visitors annually. Located approximately 126 km (78 miles) away from Munich, the castle was built during the 19th century and functioned as the main residence for local rulers.
