Pakistan Launches Crackdown on Human Traffickers Following Tragic Migrant Drowning Incident

Pakistan authorities have arrested 10 individuals suspected of being involved in human trafficking following the recent tragic incident in which dozens of migrants drowned off the coast of Greece. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a swift crackdown on agents engaged in people smuggling and emphasized that severe punishment awaits those responsible.

Every year, a significant number of young Pakistanis embark on dangerous journeys in an attempt to enter Europe illegally, seeking a better life. Among the victims of the recent tragedy, which occurred when a rusty trawler sank off Greece’s Peloponnese peninsula, it is believed that there were likely dozens of Pakistanis, with at least 78 confirmed fatalities and hundreds more still missing.

Authorities in Pakistan have detained nine individuals in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the home region of a majority of the victims, and one person in Gujrat, a city often used as a launching point for migrants. The detained individuals are currently under investigation for their involvement in facilitating the illegal migration process.

As per a joint statement from the International Organization for Migration and the UN Refugee Agency, it is approximated that the ill-fated ferry carried a passenger count ranging from 400 to 750 individuals. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 12 Pakistani nationals survived, but they do not have precise information regarding the total number of individuals on the boat.

An immigration official, speaking anonymously to AFP, suggested that the figure could exceed 200. The Prime Minister’s office released a statement emphasizing a firm directive to intensify efforts in combating human trafficking, considering it a heinous crime.

Political instability and a struggling economy drive tens of thousands of Pakistanis to leave the country each year, both through legal and illegal means. Young men, primarily from eastern Punjab and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, often follow a route through Iran, Libya, Turkey, and Greece in their quest to enter Europe unlawfully.

The recent incident has sparked a renewed focus on addressing illegal migration and human trafficking in Pakistan. Authorities are determined to take decisive action to prevent such tragedies and dismantle networks involved in these heinous crimes.
