Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his determination to ensure that those responsible for the tragic train crash in India face the “harshest punishment.” The accident, which occurred in Odisha’s Balasore district, resulted in the deaths of over 300 people and left 900 others injured. The number of fatalities continues to rise, with 15 additional bodies recovered on Saturday night.
During his visit to the crash site earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi assured the affected families that the government would take care of those who were killed or injured. He described the incident as a major, painful, and disturbing tragedy. The Prime Minister emphasized that the government would spare no effort in supporting the well-being of the injured family members.
Expressing condolences, Prime Minister Modi stated that the government stands with the grieving families during this difficult time. He announced that comprehensive inquiries had been initiated to determine the cause of the accident. He warned that those found guilty would face the most severe punishment and would not be spared.
According to preliminary reports, a signal failure resulted in one passenger train derailing and colliding with another. The incident, which occurred around 7 pm local time on Friday, also involved a freight train. K. S. Anand, the chief public relations officer of the South Eastern Railway, explained that the Coromandel Express was mistakenly directed to the loop line instead of the main line, leading to the collision with a parked goods train. As a result, the coaches of the Coromandel Express fell onto the tracks, causing the derailment of the Howrah Superfast Express as well.
The aftermath of the tragedy has overwhelmed local hospitals, with injured individuals filling rooms, corridors, and even the floors. Witnesses described the scene as resembling a war zone, as doctors struggled to handle the influx of patients, many of whom suffered severe injuries. Despite efforts to transfer some patients to specialized facilities four hours away, the casualty count remains high, and families are now traveling long distances to identify and collect the bodies of their loved ones.
Prime Minister Modi, who had been scheduled to launch new high-speed trains on the day of the accident, instead found himself facing one of the deadliest train crashes in the country’s history. While the exact cause of the accident is still being investigated, early indications suggest a possible signaling fault.
The tragedy has deeply affected Prime Minister Modi, who visited the crash site to witness the rescue efforts and inspect the wreckage. He also personally met with survivors, expressing his profound sorrow and offering the government’s unwavering commitment to providing assistance to those affected by the disaster.
