Manchester United has announced the passing of one of football’s most iconic figures, Sir Bobby Charlton, at the age of 86. The club released a heartfelt statement on Saturday, remembering Sir Bobby as “one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.”
His remarkable journey in football started when he joined Manchester United on June 1, 1953, at the tender age of 16. Over a span of 17 years with the club, Sir Bobby played an astonishing 758 games, netting 249 goals. Both records stood unmatched until 2008 when Ryan Giggs surpassed his appearance count, and Wayne Rooney overtook his goal tally in 2017.
Beyond club football, Sir Bobby was a vital figure in the England team, most notably in the 1966 World Cup-winning squad. That same year, he was also crowned the Ballon d’Or winner. Even today, he stands as England’s third-highest goal scorer.
Throughout his illustrious career, Sir Bobby received numerous accolades and honors. In December 2008, he was presented with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. A few months later, in March 2009, the city of Manchester honored him with the freedom of the city. Further solidifying his legacy at Manchester United, the South Stand of Old Trafford was renamed in his honor in February 2016.
His influence wasn’t limited to the football pitch. Sir Bobby was instrumental in several English World Cup and Olympic Games bids, notably the triumphant London 2012 campaign. Off the field, he was actively involved in charitable endeavors, raising awareness for various crucial causes.
The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation serves as a testament to his commitment to making a difference. The club highlighted, “his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.”
The Charlton family shared their grief, stating: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family.” They extended their gratitude to all who cared for him and supported him throughout his life, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
