New tactics and measures are being introduced in various parts of the city centre

Everything you need to know

  • Four specific areas in Liverpool city centre have been identified as “high priority zones” for a new crackdown on crime and anti-social behaviour.
  • The four targeted zones are Chavasse Park, St George’s Quarter, Ropewalks, and Mathew Street.
  • The initiative is funded by £300,000 from the Home Office, secured by Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell.
  • New and targeted interventions will be deployed, focusing on preventing knife crime, violence, and robbery.
  • A novel tactic will involve installing speakers to play classical music in hotspot areas, a proven method used to discourage loitering, vandalism, and graffiti.
  • Other measures include dedicated police operations, environmental upgrades (like improved lighting), new CCTV cover, and the deployment of youth outreach teams and intervention teams (like the ‘Village Angels’) to support vulnerable people.
  • The goal is to reinforce that Liverpool city centre is a safe, welcoming, and vibrant place for residents, businesses, and visitors.
