South Korea reported a highly pathogenic avian influenza case at a laying hen farm in southwestern Gyeonggi Province, the authorities said Friday. The bird flu was detected at the farm in Pyeongtaek, about 50 kilometers south of Seoul, the Central Disaster Management Headquarters (CDMH) said. The CDMH sent a response team to the farm to take quarantine measures, including access control, culling and an epidemiological analysis. It also issued a 36-hour temporary ban on movements around all hen farms nationwide, related livestock facilities and transport vehicles. The authorities called on the public to stay clear of areas visited by migratory birds that may carry the virus and to strictly follow quarantine practices.
